Billabong picks up grommet Campbell

Denmark surfer Emi Campbell finished fourth in Saturdays Gromprix, and agreed to a sponsorship deal with Billabong the same day.
SHE may have only finished fourth in the 2012 Gromprix, but Denmark youngster Emi Campbell walked away from the weekend’s invitational under-18 surf contest with bigger, better news.
Between heats on Saturday international surf company Billabong confirmed they picked up the 14year-old, in a soon-to-be signed sponsorship contract.
The deal was announced over loudspeaker to the crowd while Emi tried to keep focused on the task at hand.
Emi's fathen Peter Campbell, said the weekend proved to be positive, regardless of the final
result.
In somewhat of a shambles, six surfers were forced to take to the water for a single 20-minute final in front of thousands of spectators after the contest began to run late.
"It was always going to be tight for waves out there," he said.
"She surfed really well in the first heat and smashed all the other girls, including the one who went on to win it.
She only needed a smallish score to win but didn’t know that and went for a big turn on a big wave out the back."
But Mr Campbell was even more stoked his daughter had all but sealed e deal with one of the world’s three-biggest surf brands.
"It will give her some development opportunity because they work with a really core group of kids, " he said.
"I’m sure she is the only girl to be picked up by Billabong in WA and there is only three or four
girls in Australia sponsored by them."

Mitch Sainty performed best of three Denmark lads in the boys division during the Gromprix
contest, making it through to the second round before being knocked out.

TEENAGE surfing sensation Emi Campbell will aim to defend her Department of Sport and Recreation Gromprix crown when she and three fellow Denmark surfers hit South Side at Margaret River this weekend. They will be competing in the under-13 invitational contest.

Fresh off winning a State round at Gas Bay a fortnight ago, 14-year-old Emi said she was expecting some stiff competition in the girl’s division."I’m a bit nervous but I’ve competed there before so am pretty confident about it," she said.  "There are going to be a lot more girls in it this year because a lot of them have stepped up and are more competitive"
Taking a wealth of competition experience with her, The Denmark High School students form has been bolstered recently by a fitting choice of school subjects. "I’ve spent a far bit of time in the water lately and it’s been made a bit easier because we’re doing surfing at school for physical recreation," Emi laughed.
The Gromprix is an invitational junior event ‘run alongside the ASP Prime Telstra DrugAware Pro at Margaret River. The event has attracted a huge line-up of international surfers including 11-time men’s ASP world champion Kelly Slater
The 42 young contestants will also participate in workshops conducted by Surfing Australia’s national coaching director Martin Dunn and sport science manager Jeremy Sheppard to develop their professionalism.
Denmark surfers Lachy Ross, Mitch Saintly and Austin Taylor will contest the boys’ division.
Lachy 13, who finished fifth in the event last year hoped a spike in swell on the south coast today would help his preparation. With a new board, the cheeky goofy footer said he was looking forward to competing against many of his mates.
